Document Abstract

Introduction

This document describes the basic framework of Generic CAL. It is intended as an introduction to Generic CAL operation and syntax that stresses the object-oriented aspects of Generic CAL. It is believed that the object-oriented methodology offers the best means of understanding the complex interaction between devices, controls, and controllers present in a Generic Network environment. The EIA-721 standard applies to a Generic Network. A Generic Network is any digital network linking devices that communicate command and control messages using Generic CAL plus the Application Layer functions defined in EIA-721. The OSI communications layers below the Application Layer are not specified by EIA-721.
