ASTM Redlines Reduce Organizations' Revision Worries

It's a fact of life—standards change. Oftentimes, these changes are difficult to see unless you're willing to take the time to compare the documents, line by line. For more information about ASTM International, please visit: http://engineers.ihs.com/collections/astm/index.jsp

That's why ASTM International began offering redlines of its standards. Introduced in 2003, ASTM redlines allow you to see in an instant all the changes that have been made to previous versions of active ASTM standards. The changes are easily identifiable: additions are underlined and deletions are indicated by text that has been crossed out

When ASTM first began providing its redlines, the organization's goal was to create them only as new versions of standards were introduced. But according to John Pace, ASTM vice president of publications and marketing, ASTM decided to revise its strategy after receiving feedback on the new offerings. "The product was so well received by the marketplace that after one-and-a-half years, we decided to go back and create redlines for all of our standards that had a previous version. We didn't want to wait for the new version to come out."

The redlines were first developed based on requests from ASTM's petroleum committees, but quickly became a popular option across all of ASTM's standards categories. "For those organizations that have to pay attention to revision controls and the revision of new standards—such as aviation and aerospace companies—it's an extremely valuable tool," says Pace.

The majority of ASTM's 12,000 standards are now available as redlines. While the redlines are not sold on their own, they can be purchased with the original standard, and are available with individual downloads or as part of a subscription service.

Along with its redlines, ASTM also offers redlines on demand, a custom service that customers can request when they want to create unique comparisons of standards. With this service, companies can easily compare an active standard with any previous version of the document, or can even compare it with several previous versions.

While redlines on demand is a specialized service that not all companies may need, ASTM's original redline offerings is clearly a popular choice for all the organization's customers.

"We have not received anything but positive feedback from the marketplace," says Pace. "It was well worth the investment for us, both as a feature and as a member benefit."
