PLCS*
Inc. and GEIA** Press Release The Product Life Cycle Support (PLCS) Initiative
and the GEIA, Data and Configuration Management Committee (G33) are pleased to
announce harmonization of configuration management definitions. Consistent definitions
across standards will improve the exchange of configuration management (CM) information
and provide opportunities for sustainable business growth in the asset-intensive
domain associated with logistics support of complex, high-value products. The
GEIA, G33, is working to revise their main process standard for Configuration
Management, EIA 649, to reflect current best practices. They are also working
on EIA 836, Configuration Management Data Exchange and Interoperability. This
project provides a data dictionary of CM terms using XML. US DoD and UK Mod are
supporting both initiatives, in line with their policy of adopting appropriate
commercial standards. The
EIA 836 project entered balloting at GEIA in January 2002. Comments may be submitted
at http://www.dcnicn.com/cm. The EMERGING
REVISION to EIA 649 will begin balloting later this year. PLCS will deliver their
information models for ISO balloting during the summer. For more information on
either project please visit their Web sites at http://www.plcsinc.org
and http://www.geia.org/sstc/G33/.

Technical Architecture - Beta testing May 2002 IHS is striving
to assist the Government in meeting its interoperability challenges by delivering
an integrated, electronically delivered product that allows consumers of the Joint
Technical Architecture (JTA) information to locate it quickly and efficiently.
A value-added piece of this equation is IHS TechConnect - providing instant
access to referenced military and commercial specs and standards. Today, the JTA
provides an appendix of references necessary to comply with the JTA. A user must
consult this appendix, look up each standard, determine his or her level of access,
retrieve the documents, and then return to the task at hand. Soon, IHS will speed
this process by at least 75%! IHS will provide a single point of access at the
critical point of user need.
