Counterfeit parts are a growing problem for companies in a wide range of industries, from electronics and medical devices to aerospace and defense. There are a number of theories as to why we’re seeing more counterfeit components flood the marketplace, such as the increasing reliance on the grey or secondary market, part shortages due to the introduction of regulations limiting the use of lead and inadequate procurement processes. But one thing is for sure: It’s a problem that won’t be going away anytime soon.

That’s why we have chosen to focus on the subject of counterfeit components in this issue of Advisor. You’ll read about the results of a survey conducted by IHS and Supply & Demand Chain Executive magazine in which more than 1,000 respondents helped benchmark the impact of counterfeits on a number of industries. In addition, you can read about the work being done by two industry organizations helping members fight back against counterfeit parts.
