About This Item

Full Description

1 SCOPE.

This specification covers the basic physical, chemical and performance requirements of solvents used to clean primed or previously painted surfaces prior to topcoat painting. The solvents are covered by specification numbers specific to the subsequently applied paint with which they are used, described below. The cleaners may be a single solvent or blend of classes of solvents such as aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbons or alcohols. The cleaners must effectively remove dirt, oil, fingerprints and any other soils detrimental to the subsequent painting process. The cleaner must not attack the primed surface or leave a residue which will affect topcoat adhesion or appearance, such as streaking or telegraphing. In addition, cleaners such as 9981948 for steering columns must not attack or cause stress cracking of various plastic component parts.
