Full Description

Preface

This is the fifth edition of CSA/ANSI Z21.41 • CSA 6.9, Quick-disconnect devices for use with gas fuel appliances . It supersedes the previous editions published in 2014, 2011, 2003, and 1998.  The following are the major changes to this edition:  a) coverage has been included for quick-disconnect devices used with manual valves;  b) Figures 1 and 2 have been updated;  c) this Standard has been updated for accessibility;  d) 1/4 in male plug requirements have been added;  e) the maximum pressure has been reduced to 30 psi; and  f) the low temperature range has been changed from −20° and 200 °F (−28.8° and 93.3 °C) to −40° and 200 °F (−40° and 93.3 °C).  This Standard is considered suitable for use for conformity assessment within the stated scope of the Standard.  This Standard was prepared by the Z21/CSA Joint Technical Advisory Group on Manually Operated Gas Valves, under the jurisdiction of the Technical Committee on Gas Appliances and Related Accessories and Z21/83 Technical Committee on Performance and Installation of Gas-Burning Appliances and Related Accessories and the Strategic Steering Committee on Standards for Gas Appliances and Related Accessories, and has been formally approved by the Technical Committees and the Interprovincial/ Territorial Gas Advisory Council.  This Standard has been developed in compliance with Standards Council of Canada requirements for National Standards of Canada. It has been published as a National Standard of Canada by CSA Group.  This Standard has been approved by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) as an American National Standard.

Scope

1.1 Inclusions

This Standard applies to newly-produced, hand-operated quick-disconnect devices, sizes NPS 1/8 in to 1-1/2 in, hereinafter also referred to as devices, constructed entirely of new, unused parts and materials which provide a means for connecting and disconnecting appliances or appliance connectors to gas supplies, and which are for indoor and outdoor applications. These devices are equipped with automatic means to shut off the gas when the devices are disconnected.

1.2 Applicable fuel gases and pressure references

This Standard applies to quick-disconnect devices for use with natural and propane gas having maximum gas pressure ratings of 1/2 psi (3.5 kPa) up to and including 30 psi (207 kPa). A manufacturer must specify what pressure will be marked on the product. All references to psi (kPa) throughout this Standard are considered as gauge pressure unless otherwise specified.

1.3 Temperature

This Standard applies to quick-disconnect devices that are capable of operation at ambient temperatures between 32 and 200 °F (0 and 93.3 °C) if intended for indoor use only, or −40° and 200 °F (−40° and 93.3 °C) if intended for indoor/outdoor use.

1.4 Manually operated valve provisions

Clause 4.1.3 contains provisions for quick-disconnect devices that incorporate manually operated valves.

1.5 Provisions unique to Canada

Clause 7 contains provisions that are unique to Canada.

1.6 Terminology

In this Standard, “shall” is used to express a requirement, i.e., a provision that the user is obliged to satisfy in order to comply with the Standard; “should” is used to express a recommendation or that which is advised but not required; and “may” is used to express an option or that which is permissible within the limits of the Standard.  Notes accompanying clauses do not include requirements or alternative requirements; the purpose of a note accompanying a clause is to separate from the text explanatory or informative material.  Notes to tables and figures are considered part of the table or figure and may be written as requirements.  Annexes are designated normative (mandatory) or informative (non-mandatory) to define their application.

1.7 Units of measurement

In the US, the values given in US customary units are the units of record for the purposes of this Standard. The values given in parentheses are for information and comparison only.  In Canada, the values given in SI units are the units of record for the purposes of this Standard.  Note: See also Annex A.
