Based on the latest information from the field, NFPA 400, Hazardous Materials Code, is your source for specialized knowledge to help protect workers, communities, and emergency responders.

Unsafe storage, handling, and use of hazardous materials can result in serious incidents, including loss of life and millions of dollars in property damage. NFPA 400, Hazardous Materials Code, provides the newest safety information for any facility or occupancy that stores, handles, or uses one or more of the covered classes of hazardous materials.

NFPA 400, Hazardous Materials Code, consolidates the requirements for oxidizers, organic peroxides, pesticides, and ammonium nitrate based on requirements from these previous stand-alone documents: NFPA 430, Code for the Storage of Liquid and Solid Oxidizers; NFPA 432, Code for the Storage of Organic Peroxide Formulations; NFPA 434, Code for the Storage of Pesticides; and NFPA 490, Code for the Storage of Ammonium Nitrate. It also includes requirements for materials that are classified as unstable/reactive, water reactive, corrosive, pyrophoric, toxic, or flammable.

Changes in the 2022 edition of NFPA 400, Hazardous Materials Code, have been made to help ensure an adequate level of fire protection.

The changes in this newest edition include the following:

  • Chapter 14, "Organic Peroxide Formulations," has been extensively revised to include requirements for all organic peroxide quantities; the definitions of dosing vessel and protected storage room have been added to support the revisions.
  • The section on calcium ammonium nitrate has been revised to exempt compliance with the ammonium nitrate chapter, provided the calcium ammonium nitrate complies with specific manufacturing specifications; the definition for calcium ammonium nitrate has been added to support the revisions.
  • The MAQ (maximum allowable quantity) values for Class 3 oxidizers in mercantile, storage, and industrial occupancies have been increased.
  • Terminology for ignitible (flammable or combustible) liquids has been updated to align with NFPA 30, Flammable and Combustible Liquids Code.

The 2022 edition of NFPA 400, Hazardous Materials Code, is a critical tool for anyone responsible for the safe storage, handling, and use of hazardous materials in any occupancy, including facility owners/operators, authorities having jurisdiction (AHJs), insurance professionals, and many others.
