About This Item

Full Description

These test methods cover testing of concrete pipe, manhole sections, and tile. The test methods described are used in production testing and acceptance testing to evaluate the properties provided for in the specifications.

The test methods appear in the following order:

  • External load crushing strength
  • Flat slab tops
  • Base section test
  • Core strength
  • Absorption
  • Hydrostatic
  • Permeability
  • Manhole step
  • Cylinder strength
  • Gasket lubricant
  • Joint shear
  • Alkalinity
  • Gasket measurement
  • Off-center hydrostatic joint test

The test specimens shall not have been exposed to a temperature below 4°C [40°F] for the 24 h immediately preceding the test. The thermometer for measuring the temperature of the environment immediately surrounding the specimens shall meet the requirements of AASHTO M 339M/M 339, with a temperature range of at least 0 to 25°C [32 to 77°F] and an accuracy of ±1°C [±1.8°F], that records the maximum–minimum temperatures (see Note).

Note—Thermometer types suitable for use include ASTM E1 mercury thermometers; ASTM E230/E230M thermocouple thermometer, Type T standard; IEC 60584 thermocouple thermometer Type T, Class 1 or 2; or ASTM E2877 digital metal stem thermometer.

If any test specimen fails because of mechanical reasons such as failure of testing equipment or improper specimen preparation, it shall be discarded and another specimen taken.

Specimens shall be selected in accordance with the specifications for the type of pipe or tile being tested.
