About This Item

Full Description

Scope

This standard provides guidance and a methodology to determine strength loss due to corrosion on a tubular steel pole. It allows informed, cost and risk-based decisions on the primary actionable asset management options available.

Purpose

1.2 Purpose - The standard provides information important to the electric industry because it: 1.2.1 Reinforces the critical importance of effective inspections for corrosion to the structural reliability of our transmission, distribution, and substation steel pole assets; 1.2.2. Identifies the data needed to provide strength loss guidance due to corrosion on a steel pole structure; 1.2.3. Reviews the steps to be taken to collect the data needed (refer to NACE SP0415-2015/IEEE Standard 1895TM-2014 Below Grade Inspection and Assessment of Corrosion on Steel Transmission, Distribution, and Substation Structures); 1.2.4. Provides a quantitative methodology to evaluate observed corrosion and its effects on nominal strength loss on a steel pole structure. 1.2.5. Allows informed, cost and risk-based decisions on the primary actionable asset management options available, which include: (a) Continue to monitor and observe the installed steel pole, (b) Remediate - extend the asset life of the installed steel pole, (c) Replace the installed steel pole - reset the asset life expectancy.

Abstract

New IEEE Standard - Active. Guidance and a methodology to determine strength loss due to corrosion on a tubular steel pole are provided in this standard. It allows informed, cost and risk-based decisions on the primary actionable asset management options available.
