Full Description

ESDU Struct 02.01.08 provides a graph that allows the edge stress to be determined at which sheet in compression buckles between the rivets. The method relies on the equation given in ESDU 76016 for defining the stress-strain curve for the sheet material beyond the limit of proportionality and so covers buckling in the plastic range. The edge stress is a function of the thickness of the sheet, the rivet pitch, the properties of the sheet material, and the fastener fixity coefficient, values of which are tabulated for different types of fastener. The material properties required for the sheet are the elastic modulus and the stress at which it is twice the tangent modulus, and the material characteristic for which values may be found in ESDU 76016. A worked example illustrates the use of the data. ESDU Struct 02.01.09 uses the data from the graph to provide curves for three specific aluminium alloys and one value of rivet fixity coefficient. ESDU 90002 introduces a program that enables the edge stress for buckling between the rivets to be computed directly.
