Full Description

ESDU Struct 02.01.02 provides curves from which the stress in the long edges of the plate can be determined from a knowledge of its dimensions, Young's modulus of the material, and the average stress applied to the shorter edges. The curves are plotted for simply-supported longer edges with various values of lateral elastic edge restraint from zero to fully constrained, and the curve for fully-fixed edges is also included. A long plate is defined as one in which the longer side is more than 2.5 times the length of the shorter side. It is noted that the effect of variation of the buckled wave form has little effect for edge stresses up to 3 times the buckling stress and so that effect is neglected. The assumption that the wave form does not change leads to a linear variation of the edge stress with the average applied stress. An alternative presentation of the data in terms of the buckling stress appears in ESDU Struct 02.01.23. Curves specific to an aluminium plate with edges restrained by sturdy stringers appear in ESDU Struct 02.01.03 and relate to higher edge stresses.
