Full Description

Preface

This is the fifth edition of CSA B836, Storage, handling, and dispensing of aviation fuels at aerodromes. It supersedes the editions published in 2019, 2014, 2005, and 2000. This edition has been updated to reflect current industry practices and new industry standards that are instrumental in the proper and safe methods of operations at aerodromes. In addition to these changes, it includes in-depth information and more stringent inspection schedules and more stringent checklists and forms that correspond to the daily, weekly, and annual inspection guidelines. Significant changes to this edition include a) new dirt defense and electronic water sensor filtration; b) new water barrier filtration; c) hydrant pit valve; d) hydrant pit lids; e) handling of diesel exhaust fluid; and f) phase-out of filter monitors.

The design requirements of this Standard are effective upon its publication for the construction of new, or the alteration of existing, facilities within the scope of this Standard, unless described as mandatory for all facilities. The implementation of all procedural requirements (training, operations, emergency response, etc.) will be effective as stipulated by the authority having jurisdiction. Also, this edition harmonizes with other industry publications for into-plane fuelling standards, thereby providing synergies for standardized operating practices that reference similar documents for auditing purposes. This Standard has been developed in compliance with Standards Council of Canada requirements for National Standards of Canada. It has been published as a National Standard of Canada by CSA Group.

Scope

1.1 General This Standard specifies the minimum design, construction, operation, maintenance, and emergency response requirements for the storage, handling, and dispensing of aviation fuels at aerodromes.

1.2 Inclusions This Standard specifies requirements for a) the safety of aerodrome employees and the travelling public; b) the provision of clean, dry, and on-specification aviation fuel; and c) the protection of property and the environment associated with the storage, handling, and dispensing of aviation fuels.

1.3 Terminology In this Standard, "shall" is used to express a requirement, i.e., a provision that the user is obliged to satisfy in order to comply with the Standard; "should" is used to express a recommendation or that which is advised but not required; and "may" is used to express an option or that which is permissible within the limits of the Standard. Notes accompanying clauses do not include requirements or alternative requirements; the purpose of a note accompanying a clause is to separate from the text explanatory or informative material. Notes to tables and figures are considered part of the table or figure and may be written as requirements. Annexes are designated normative (mandatory) or informative (non-mandatory) to define their application.

1.4 Units of measurement The values given in SI units are the units of record for the purpose of this Standard. The values given in parentheses are for information and comparison only.
