Full Description

Preface:

This is the third edition of CAN/CSA-C22.2 No. 60335-2-59, Household and similar electrical appliances — Safety — Part 2-59: Particular requirements for insect killers, which is an adoption, with Canadian deviations, of the identically titled IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) Standard 60335-2-59 (edition 3:2002 consolidated with Amendment 1:2006 and Amendment 2:2009). It supersedes the previous edition, published in 2006 as CAN/CSA-E60335-2-59 (adopted IEC 60335-2-59:2002), and it replaces CAN/CSA-C22.2 No. 189-M89, High-voltage insect killers. This Standard is one in a series of Standards issued by CSA Group under Part II of the Canadian Electrical Code.

For brevity, this Standard will be referred to as "CAN/CSA-C22.2 No. 60335-2-59" throughout.

This Standard is intended to be used in conjunction with CAN/CSA-C22.2 No. 60335-1:11, Safety of household and similar appliances — Part 1: General requirements (adopted IEC 60335-1:2001+A1:2004 +A2:2006, with Canadian deviations).

The following have been identified as differences from the second edition to the third edition of CAN/CSA-C22.2 No. 60335-2-59:
  • new construction requirements for enclosures, lamps and lamp holders, fuse holders as well as switches
  • new marking and instruction requirements
  • new internal wiring requirements
  • requirements for supply connection and external flexible cords
  • requirements for resistance to heat and fire
  • requirements for radiation, toxicity, and similar hazards
Scope:

This International Standard deals with the safety of electric insect killers for household and similar purposes, their rated voltage being not more than 250 V.

Appliances not intended for normal household use but that nevertheless may be a source of danger to the public, such as appliances intended to be used by laymen in shops, in light industry and on farms, are within the scope of this standard.

As far as is practicable, this standard deals with the common hazards presented by appliances that are encountered by all persons in and around the home. However, in general, it does not take into account
  • persons (including children) whose physical, sensory or mental capabilities; or lack of experience and
  • knowledge prevents them from using the appliance safely without supervision or instruction; children playing with the appliance.
NOTE 101 Attention is drawn to the fact that
  • for appliances intended to be used in vehicles or on board ships or aircraft, additional requirements may be necessary;
  • in many countries additional requirements are specified by the national health authorities, the national authorities responsible for the protection of labour and similar authorities.
NOTE 102 This standard does not apply to
  • appliances that function by emitting vaporized chemicals;
  • appliances emitting ultrasonic waves;
  • appliances intended to be used in locations where special conditions prevail, such as the presence of a corrosive or explosive atmosphere (dust, vapour or gas).
NOTE 103 For appliances provided with discharge lamps or tungsten filament lamps, IEC 60598-1 also applies as far as is reasonable.
