Description / Abstract:

Material Description.

This specification describes zippers used to aid the trimming operations of automotive interiors and other miscellaneous applications.

Type 1. High strength, conventional continuous polyester monofilament zipper elements with texturized polyester tape construction, or approved equivalent. Typically for seating applications.

Type 2. Light and medium strength conventional zippers with elements made of either metal or polyester. Metal zippers shall be aluminum 5056 (or other metal as agreed to with the GM Approving Materials Engineer), with black baked enamel finish, W25A-848 or approved equivalent. Tape construction to be 100% texturized polyester or approved equivalent. Polyester zippers shall be similar to Type 1 zippers and are typically for armrest or headrest applications.

Type 3. Medium strength continuous concealed polyester monofilament zipper elements with texturized polyester tapes or approved equivalent. Used as Invisible zippers typically in seating applications.

Zippers are identified in the GM Materials Approved Source List (GMMASL) with construction codes. Properties such as strength type, woven vs. sewn, etc. are identified in the construction code and the associated construction specification sheet.

Applicability. Automotive interior trim such as seat covers and other functional applications such as exterior spare tire covers.

This specification describes a zipper to aid in the trimming operation of automotive interiors and other miscellaneous applications.

Changes. Any change to the material, constituent, or processing requires reapproval to this specification as well as component validation and Production Part Approval Process (PPAP). No changes to the material may be made without GM Approving Materials Engineer concurrence. It is the sole responsibility of the supplier to provide the GM Approving Materials Engineer, unsolicited, documentation of any change to the material and request reapproval.

Solar Glass. Requirements in this specification are based upon vehicles using solar glass (GMW3136 Type 4); vehicles using other types of glass will need to adjust requirements specifically for that program.
