I. INTRODUCTION
A study was performed to provide bending moment ratings as a function of internal pressure for five API clamp-hub combinations and for a heavy duty 18 3/4-10 connector, designed to withstand a one million ft·lb bending moment at working pressure. The design of the heavy duty connector was a part of the study. The stress allowables of Appendix I, API Spec 6A, Fourteenth Edition, March, 1983, were used for this study. In addition, the requirement that there be no theoretical hub face separation was used as a basis for the bending analysis calculations. It should be mentioned that, for the work reported here, the assumption was made that the connector is subjected to a pressure end load equal to the internal pressure times the bore area. For applications where this is not the case, suitable adjustments should be made. A method for making this adjustment is outlined in Section IV of this report. The calculations for this study were done with the Fortran program described in the report titled "Summary of Design Equations For Clamp Type Connectors", prepared for the Association of Wellhead Equipment Manufacturers by Harry J. Sweet and Associates, Inc., dated June, 1975. |
