Purpose. This regulation prescribes policies and responsibilities for the identification and control of critical items through the establishment of a critical safety item program. A critical safety item program provides' for intensive control of those items which, if not conforming to design data or quality requirements, would result in an unsafe condition for personnel or major system loss/damage. The CSIP provides a continuous improving approach with efforts directed towards eliminating/reducing potentially unsafe conditions.

Applicability, a. Headquarters, U.S. Army Materiel Command (HQ AMC); major subordinate commands (MSC) , including subordinate installations and activities; program managers; and separate installations and activities reporting directly to HQ AMC that design, procure, receive, store, issue, maintain, overhaul, rework, surveillance test and modify mission materiel.

b. Any system identified by contractor or Government to contain a critical safety item (CSI) as defined in paragraph 6a.

c. Materiel (except medical) covered by AR 40-61.

d. Ammunition, nuclear weapons, and chemical materiel stockpile and reliability programs covered by AR 702-6 will take precedence and not be duplicated by the requirements of this regulation.
