Description / Abstract:

Abstract:

The objective of this project was to provide exposure data of man on toluene, o-, m- and p-xylenes as well as ethylbenzene at gasoline service stations, loading facilities and processing plants of the oil industry in addition to the already published exposure data on benzene in the DGMK research report 250.

Altogether 1136 measurements of toluene and 1062 of the sum of the C8-aromatics by 10 companies were available for the following work areas and activities:

• gasoline service stations in town and at the Autobahn

• loading facilities for tank truck, railcars and tankers

• tank truck drivers and tanker crews

• refinery plants

• facilities for production and turnover of raw and pure benzene and o- and p-xylenes resp.

All measurements were related to individuals. The sampling period ranged from 6-8 hours (except for railcar and tanker loading).

The evaluation of the measurements resulted in geometric mean values below 10 mg/m3 toluene or C8-aromatics resp. or below 2 ml/m3 for all the working areas and activities investigated.
