Description / Abstract:

1. Scope

1.1 This guide provides a description of practices usually applicable to fuel rods containing sintered pellets, clad with a zirconium alloy, and intended for use in light-water-moderated power reactor fuel assemblies. This guide is intended for educational purposes only.

1.2 This guide does not include provisions for preventing criticality accidents or requirements for health and safety. Observance of this guide does not relieve the user of the obligation to be aware of and conform to all applicable federal, state, and local regulations pertaining to possessing, shipping, processing, or using source or special nuclear materials.

1.3 A schematic drawing of one type of fuel rod is shown in Fig. 1. Other types may include different features, such as a plenum and spring only at the top of the fuel pellet stack, or similar end plugs on both ends of the rod.

1.4 This standard does not purport to address the safety problems associated with its use. It is the responsibility of whoever uses this standard to consult and establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.
