Description / Abstract:

This Standard applies to electrical aids intended to be used by physically disabled persons to facilitate their ability to communicate with others, alter the state of their environment, and to position themselves.

This Standard includes requirements relating to the safety of these aids and documentation on them, as well as recommendations of special interest to developers, prescribers, manufacturers, and users.

The purpose of this Standard is to minimize as far as possible the hazards associated with electrical aids involving:

(a) Their use;

(b) Incorrect or inadequate information; and

(c) Incorrect prescription.

This Standard is not intended to apply to aids that are wholly or partially implanted, to aids designed for primary use by the blind and/or deaf, to therapeutic aids, or to myoelectric prostheses.

This Standard is not intended to apply to the components or circuits of a power drive mobility aid whose sole purpose is for the mobility of a physically disabled person.

Note: This Standard would apply to components or circuits of a power drive mobility aid whose purpose is to provide mobility as well as to allow disabled persons to facilitate their ability to communicate with others, to alter the state of their environment, and to position themselves.
