Full Description

Preface

This is the fourth edition of CSA B140.4, Oil-fired warm air furnaces . It supersedes the previous editions published in 2004, 1974, and 1971. It is one of a series of oil-burning equipment Standards providing minimum requirements for the safe operation, acceptable performance, design, construction, manufacture, marking, and testing of oil-burning equipment and should be read in conjunction with CSA B140.0, Oil-burning equipment: General requirements. The major changes in this edition include the following: a) The scope has been rewritten for clarity and has been expanded to include condensing furnaces. b) New construction and performance requirements have been added for condensing furnaces. c) The requirement for electrical features has been updated to reference CSA C22.2 No. 60335-2-102, which replaces CSA C22.2 No. 3. d) Clarification has been provided regarding i) the requirement that prohibits combustion air from mixing with flue products; ii) the minimum thickness of steel on the outer casing; iii) the cross-sectional area for flue collars; iv) the use of draft regulators; v) when the simulated life test is to be performed on heat exchangers; vi) the use of pressure-relief devices; vii) requirements for direct vented furnaces - they do not require the measurement of over-fire pressure; viii) marking the output capacity; and ix) the exemption for the minimum steel thickness for the outer casing. e) The note in the simulated life test that excepted some stainless steel heat exchangers has been deleted. f) The general marking requirement has been revised to address the type of fuel(s) used. g) A new marking requirement has been added for an electrical wiring diagram. h) New requirements have been added for the installation manual and the operating instructions for the homeowner to address appliances acceptable to the certification body for use with biodiesel content in excess of 5%. i) Provisions have been added for testing equipment for use with fuels containing biodiesel content between 5 and 20%. j) The maximum limit for flue-gas loss has been deleted. k) All references to the ambient temperature being 25 °C (77 °F) for temperature tests have been removed because CSA B140.0 covers ambient temperatures. l) A cautionary note has been added for temperature testing. m) Additional marking requirements have been added for outdoor use of biodiesel content in excess of 5%. n) The marking translations in Annex A have been updated. o) A new annex (Annex B) has been added, which provides recommended testing sequences. This Standard is considered suitable for use for conformity assessment within the stated scope of the Standard. This Standard was prepared by the Technical Committee on Oil-Burning Appliance Standards, under the jurisdiction of the Strategic Steering Committee on Fuels and Appliances, and has been formally approved by the Technical Committee. This Standard has been developed in compliance with Standards Council of Canada requirements for National Standards of Canada. It has been published as a National Standard of Canada by CSA Group.

Scope

1.1 Application This Standard applies to complete, vent- (flue-) connected, or direct vent connected oil-fired warm air furnaces and unit heaters, irrespective of the heating capacity or the type of burner used. This Standard also applies to oil-fired condensing warm air furnaces.

1.2 Intent This Standard applies to furnaces employing forced circulation of the heated air and furnaces intended to be used with pipes or ducts for the distribution of the heated air for the following: a) downflow furnaces; b) duct furnaces; c) horizontal furnaces; d) inline furnaces; e) upflow furnaces; or f) multi-position furnaces.

1.3 Outdoor installation Requirements for appliances primarily for outdoor installation are specified in Clause 11.

1.4 Terminology In this Standard, "shall" is used to express a requirement, i.e., a provision that the user is obliged to satisfy in order to comply with the Standard; "should" is used to express a recommendation or that which is advised but not required; and "may" is used to express that which is permissible within the limits of the Standard. Notes accompanying clauses do not include requirements or alternative requirements; the purpose of a note accompanying a clause is to separate from the text explanatory or informative material. Notes to tables and figures are considered part of the table or figure and may be written as requirements. Annexes are designated normative (mandatory) or informative (non-mandatory) to define their application.

1.5 Units of measurement The values given in SI units are the units of record for the purposes of this Standard. The values given in parentheses are for information and comparison only.
