Description / Abstract:

Purpose and application

The purpose of the impact flexural test is to ascertain the behaviour of specified test specimens under defined conditions of impact flexural loading, and to assess the toughness or brittleness within the limits set by the test conditions.

The impact flexural test specified in this Standard is used for the testing of test specimens made from moulding material (compression or injection moulding materials) 1 ), or taken from moulded material (compression or injection moulded) or from laminated products 1 ). The test is primarily suited for production and processing control purposes, and for the acceptance of moulding materials and of moulded and laminated products.

The values obtained by the impact flexural test of test specimens specially prepared from moulding material are not directly applicable to mouldings in general (compression or injection mouldings) 1), since such values are dependent on the shape and conditions of manufacture of the mouldings in question.

A comprehensive assessment of the behaviour of plastics under impact flexural loading is only possible if the test described here is supplemented by further tests conducted on test specimens in a variety of shapes and thicknesses, with the hammer striking at various speeds, with the test specimens arranged in different ways, and with varied temperature conditions.
