Description / Abstract:

The purpose of this standard is to facilitate interoperability and compatibility between automatic link establishment (ALE) HF radio systems of the Federal Government.

This standard specifies automated HF radio features: group multiple station addressing; special address modes of anycalls, wildcard, and selected allcall; multipath; multiple station operations of star group; and polling.

Purpose. The purpose of this standard is to improve the Federal acquisition process by providing Federal departments and agencies with a comprehensive, authoritative source for details of automatic networking operations for HF ALE radios. This document establishes technical parameters, in the form of mandatory standards and optional design objectives (DO), that are considered necessary to ensure interoperability of new long-haul and tactical radio equipment in the HF band. This document was developed in accordance with the Statement of Requirements (SOR) for the Development of a Family of Federal Standards for Automated High Frequency Radio to provide communications interoperability and to satisfy the requirements of Federal departments and agencies. It is also the purpose of this document to establish a level of performance of new radio equipment considered necessary to satisfy the requirements of a majority of users. These technical parameters represent minimum interoperability and performance standards. The technical parameters of this document may be exceeded in order to satisfy certain specific requirements, provided that interoperability is maintained. That is, the capability to incorporate features such as additional standard and nonstandard interfaces is not precluded.

Applicability. This standard shall be used by all departments and agencies of the Federal Government. The standard shall be used in the planning, design, and procurement, including lease and purchase, of all new data communications systems that utilize the HF ALE radio media for networking purposes.
