This specification covers the materials, processing and performance requirements for lightweight composite armor composed of high-strength ceramic bonded to nonmetallic backing materials.

The armor covered by this specification shall be classified as specified herein (see 6.2).

The ceramic composite armor shall be classified into types according to its ballistic protection level (i.e., ballistic resistance):
Type I - Armor intended for ballistic protection against .30 caliber AP
               M2 (7.62 mm) projectiles

Type II - Armor intended for ballistic protection against .50 caliber AP
               M2 (12.7 mm) projectiles (see 3.7.1)

Type III - Armor intended for ballistic protection against .30 caliber Ball
               M2 (7.62 mm) projectiles

Type IV - Armor intended for ballistic protection against 14.5 mm
               (14.5 × 114), API, Type BS-41 or API, Type 56 projectiles

Type V - Armor intended for ballistic protection against .50 caliber AP
               M2 (12.7 mm) projectiles (see 3.7.1)

The ceramic composite armor shall be classified into classes according to the facing used:

Class 1 - 90% Aluminum oxide ceramic

Class 2 - 95% Aluminum oxide ceramic

Class 3 - Silicon carbide ceramic

Class 4 - Boron carbide ceramic

Class 5 - Titanium diboride ceramic

Class 6 - Other ceramic or ceramic/ceramic composite

The ceramic composite armor shall be classified into grades according to the reinforcement material used in the backplate:

Grade A - Aramid (Kevlar) - fabric reinforced laminate

Grade B - Glass - fabric reinforced laminate

Grade C - Other
