Description / Abstract:

Laboratory equipment

This standard applies to laboratory equipment intended to perform one of the following activities:

a) The measurement of physical or chemical properties of materials.

b) The measurement of the functional performance of a piece of equipment.

c) Qualitative or quantitative analysis, or measurements.

d) Preparation of materials for further use, analysis, or measurements.

e) Any of the support operations essential to items (a) - (d) above.

Auxiliary or accessory equipment

This standard also applies to auxiliary equipment and accessories intended to be used with laboratory equipment covered by this standard. These auxiliary or accessory equipment may be separate by themselves and may or may not by themselves perform a complete function, but are used in addition to or as a supplement to the equipment specified in sub-clause 1.1.3.

Equipment covered

Laboratory equipment includes, but is not necessarily restricted to:

a) Indicating and recording equipment,

b) Sample preparation equipment,

c) Sample processing equipment,

d) Sample analyzers and testers,

e) Cabinets and work stations.


This standard applies to equipment that is rated for connection to:

a) A supply source (AC or DC or both) that does not exceed

1) 600 volts for permanently connected products,

2) 250 volts for cord connected products;

b) A Type 1 limited supply source according to clause 14;

c) A Type 2 limited supply source according to clause 14 and internally derives a Type 1 limited or safety circuit from that source.

Equipment not covered

This standard does not apply to equipment intended primarily:

a) For identifying, examining, and investigating materials and making measurements and tests such as might be associated with manufacturing processes and quality-control procedures.

This type of equipment is categorized as Inspection and Measuring Equipment and covered by the applicable requirements in the Standards for Motor Operated Appliances, UL 73, Portable Electric Lamps, UL 153, Information Processing and Business Equipment, UL 478, in addition to the applicable requirements in this standard.

b) To measure, observe, and indicate quantities of electrical or electronic phenomena or; to supply electrical or electronic quantities for measuring purposes.

This type of equipment is covered by the requirements for electrical and electronic testing and measuring equipment, UL 1244.

c) As a special use or general use tool.

This type of equipment is covered by the Standard for Portable Electric Tools, UL 45, or Stationary and Fixed Electric Tools, UL 987.

d) For use in an office or other business establishment.

This type of equipment is covered by the Standard for Information Processing and Business Equipment, UL 478.

e) For use as a general-use direct plug-in transformer unit used as a battery charger, auxiliary supply source, substitute power, or general-use power supply.

This type of equipment is covered by the Standard for Direct Plug-in Transformer Units, UL 1310.

f) For use as self-contained refrigerators and freezers for household or commercial use.

This type of equipment is covered by the Standard for Household Refrigerators and Freezers, UL 250, and the Standard for Commercial Refrigerators and Freezers, UL 471.

g) For starting, stopping, regulating, controlling, or protecting electric motors or other equipment.

This type of equipment is covered by the Standard for Industrial Control Equipment, UL 508.
