Description / Abstract:

This outline of investigation covers electrically operated attic lifts for use only by non-mobility impaired persons. This outline of investigation does not cover attic lifts utilizing hydraulic driving means.

This outline of investigation is intended for attic lifts operating from a voltage of 600 volts or less that will be installed in accordance with the National Electrical Code, NFPA 70 and the International Residential Code only by persons trained by the attic lift manufacturer.

This outline of investigation covers attic lifts intended to carry a single person or a load from the uppermost story of a one or two family residence or residential garage to an uninhabited attic, where the assembly penetrates only the floor of the attic and the ceiling of the uppermost story or garage.

Vertical platform lifts intended for transportation of mobility impaired persons are covered by the Safety Standard for Platform Lifts and Stairway Chairlifts, ASME A18.1.

Vertical platform lifts used exclusively for carrying materials between two or more landings (dumbwaiters) are covered by the Safety Code for Elevators and Escalators, ASME A17.1/CSA B44.
